| Unclogging a
Toilet
At some point everyone will have to deal with
a stopped toilet. The first thing to do is to make sure that nobody uses
it again until it is fixed. So let everyone know about it or tape a note
to the toilet. No use in making the problem worse. Do not use drain
cleaners. If they do not clear the clog, you will be left with a
toilet or commode full of toxic chemicals and they can make plunging
dangerous.

Minor Clogs
Minor clogs can usually be cleared with a
plunger as pictured above. Place the plunger in the bowl. There should be
enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger but if it is too high, you
may need to clear some of the water first. Carefully push down on the
plunger, making smooth motions, not jerky or overly fast. If you are
having trouble getting the plunger to seal to the toilet, you can coat the
rim of the plunger with a bit of petroleum jelly. If you don't have a
plunger, run out and buy one. Every home should have a good plunger. Buy a
quality plunger, cheap ones will not work as well. If this cleared the
clog in your toilet or commode, flush it a few times to clear all of the
debris and you are done. If not, go on to the next step.

Harder Clogs
Harder clogs may require the use of a toilet
snake as pictured above. You must be careful with these as they can
scratch the finish on your toilet. Also make sure that you only use a
snake designed for use in toilets. Other snakes can damage your toilet.
Place the end into the toilet and position it into the hole. Now turn the
handle and push the clog through the drain. You may need to turn the
handle to push the snake forward and backwards several times. If this
clears the clog, flush the toilet several times to clear remaining debris
and you are done. If this doesn't work or if other drains in the
home are clogged, you probably need to call in a professional plumber.
