Staining Your Fence

How to apply stain to your fence.

Do you have a brand new fence around your home? Do you have an old fence in good shape that just looks bad? Stain that fence to add beauty, restore its looks and protect it.

Step 1

Go to your local home improvement store and choose a stain. You will find that they come in a variety of colors. You can get them with a sealer or you could buy a separate sealer. One step stains and sealers are much easier since they basically eliminate half of the application time. If you cannot decide, ask someone at the store for help.

Step 2

Make sure the wood is clean. If the wood has an existing finish, it should be removed and the wood should be sanded.

Step 3

Protect the area from drips. Mask off anything attached to or close to the fence that you do not want to get stain on. Use a piece of cardboard to keep stain from getting on your concrete or grass. You can move it along with you as you go.

Step 4

Using a paint brush, apply the stain to your fence. Be sure to paint in the direction of the wood, never against it. Use care to get the stain into every crack and nook in the wood. Do not forget to paint between boards and around hardware.

Try to keep a wet line. Do not stop for a break, keep painting until the whole job or at least the whole section is complete.

Step 5

If the manufacturer recommends it, you may need to apply a second coat. Read the directions on the stain container to see how long to wait between coats. Wait the recommended time and then apply a second coat. You may think that one coat will do, but for longer life and better protection, you may need a second. You will probably find areas that you missed while making your second pass.

Step 6

Now all that is left is to remove any masking tape, clean up your mess, put up your staining supplies and you are done.
