HOW TO INSTALL  A  CEILING  FAN.

Installing a Ceiling Fan

If you have existing wiring, installing a ceiling fan is really quite an easy task that most people should be able to do with little trouble. Just remember to take your time and do not rush. Always read through the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the fan you have bought. The ceiling fan manufacturers instructions will always take precedence over anything you read here or anywhere else.

Find an Electrician

Pre Installation

Safety first. Make sure that the power is turned off at the fuse box. Do not simply turn the wall switch off.
Remove the old light fixture and disconnect its wiring. You can have anywhere from 2 to 4 electrical wires. There will always be a neutral wire which is usually white and a hot or power wire which can be black, blue or red. There may also be a ground wire which is usually green or bare copper. You may have more than one power or hot wire if you have a wall switch that can control the fan and light separately.
Inspect the electrical box and make sure that it is capable of supporting a ceiling fan. It should be firmly attached to a rafter or other structural part of your home. Fans can be quite heavy and need good support.

Installation

Install the mounting bracket provided with the fan to the ceiling electrical box. Make sure that it is secure. Assemble the fans motor assembly as instructed by the manufacturer and hang it on the bracket. Some fans will come with a strap which will support the fan in a lower position while you install the wiring.
Now hook up the wiring as instructed by the manufacturer. Usually install like to like. White to white. Black, blue or red to Black blue or red. Green to ground or copper wire. Be sure to use wire nuts to attach wires together. Electrical tape is not good enough.
Tuck the wires up into the electrical box and begin assembling the rest of the fan. Install any decorative covers, the fan blades and finally the light kit if so equipped.
You can now turn the power back on and test the fan for proper operation. Most kits will come with a balancing kit to correct any wobble.
