Electrician and Electrical Quick Tips

"Before working on any electrical outlet or circuit, shut off the power to that area. Then use a tester to be absolutely sure that the power is off. If you have any doubts about your ability to complete a project, it will be safer and cheaper in the long run to hire an electrician."

"Protect your home electronics with a surge protector. A surge protector is a device that will break the circuit between the electrical outlet and your device if a power surge is detected. Most good surge protectors will even come with warranties that will pay for your electronics if it were to fail. Make sure that you buy a surge strip and not just an outlet box as they can look similar."

"When reading your electric meter, read from left to right. Use the lowest number, so if the pointer is between 3 and 4, it would be 3. Take that number and subtract the number from your previous reading and you will have your electrical usage."

"Check with your city to determine what electrical projects you are allowed to do on your home. Some cities are very restrictive, requiring the use of professional licensed electricians. Some may even require that you first obtain a permit."
