HOW  TO  START  A  FIRE.

Starting a Fire

It sounds like such an easy task, but starting a fire can be frustrating. There's nothing worse than spending an hour trying in vain to get a roaring fire. We will give you a brief overview of lighting a fire so you can spend your time enjoying it, not trying to start it.

Find a Chimney Contractor

What you burn is important.

Make sure that the wood you are trying to burn is dry aged firewood.
Do not use construction or scrap wood as it can contain dangerous chemicals. Would intended for building often contains chemicals like Arsenic which can be quite dangerous when burned.
Never burn green wood. It does not burn as efficiently as aged firewood and it will not light as easily. It also has a tendency to pop more because of the higher moisture content. Burning green wood can also lead to a buildup of Creosote in your chimney which can be dangerous.

Lighting the Fire

First make sure that the damper on your chimney is open. There's nothing worse than a smoke filled house.
Place Balled up newspaper on the grate or floor of your fireplace. On top of that place kindling wood. Finally place a few smaller pieces of firewood over the kindling.
Now light your newspaper and let the fire do the work. Once it has fully ignited, you can add larger pieces of firewood.

Fire Starting Tips

Never use flammable liquids to start a fire. They can burn too hot causing damage to your fireplace and chimney.
If you can't seem to get a roaring fire, try opening a window slightly. Your fire may need the extra oxygen.
Always use a fireplace grate in your fireplace. They are safer and will lift the fire off of the ground providing it with more airflow.
